Abstract


Flavonoids are phenolic compounds synthesized by vascular plants, fruits, and vegetables which have varied effects on mammalian cell systems. This study was designed to investigate the effects of some flavonoids on the growth against
Streptococcus mutans KCTC 3065, Lactobacillus acidophilus KCTC 3111, and Actinomyces Naeslundii KCTC 9013 in vitro. Minimal concentration and zone of inhibition the agar plate were measured to investigate the antimicrobial effects of the flavonoids against the strains. In the S. mutans strain, naringenin and phloretin inhibited the growth most effectively when the strain was cultured for 48 hours at 37¡ÆC anaerobically, and the minimal inhibitory concentrations of both agents were 0.5 mg per ml. In the L. acidophilus and A. naeslundii strains, phloretin inhibited the growth of these strains under same conditions, and the minimal inhibitory concentrations of the agent was 0.25 mg per ml.
